The following project was undertaken at Studio Medium, as a part of 6-month long Graduation project.
Medium is an apparel and home textile design studio based in New Delhi, headed by Riddhi Jain Satija. The studio works with various tie die techniques and Sustainability being one of their priciples led to the RE- initiative that aims at REusing tied threads discared in the process of Bandhani at the artisans end.
PROJECT BRIEF
Bandhani is a Heritage Indian craft of Resist Tie- Dyeing. It is applied to create intricate patterns on textiles and to achieve that it uses miles of yarns to tie cloth. These are the yarns with which the cloth is tied to restrict the dye from penetrating into the cloth in the dye bath.
Once untied and opened, these tiny entangled yarns are discarded.
-Re preserves and repurposes the by-products of these textile processes to relook at what is considered as 'waste' and to create one-off textile pieces. Considering the versatility of waste material, the aim of the project is to push its limitations and diversify the product possibilities in Apparel and Home pieces.
The end of one process is beginning of another.
